RIVER

River stares at the speaker, knowing the ramifications of Oren’s ultimatum, but still resisting them. With no Sovereign, he’s threatened the only way to create Immunity. By destroying the serpentwood.

And by pitting the Green Borns against the Dead Borns, he’s trying to deepen the divide.

“What the heck do we do now?” Reed asks, spearing his fingers into his hair. “There’s no way the Green Borns are going to let the Dead Borns remain in the Sting.”

River takes the controller out of his pocket and turns to stride to the missing wall so he can see if he can call Nectar, only to pause. Then freeze.

This is the last place he saw Flora. This was where they had their final conversation.

This is where she took the remaining shred of hope of ever finding the Sovereign straight over the edge.

A hand presses to his chest a moment before Echo slips in front of him. “You couldn’t have done anything, River,” she says, her eyes soft with understanding. “She’d made her decision.”

River swallows, trying to move the hard, jagged lump lodged in his throat. “How… Why would she choose that?” he whispers hoarsely.

“She was hurting.” Echo’s hand presses more firmly against his chest. Against his heart. “Sometimes it’s hard to see past that.”

He nods, understanding, yet not understanding at the same time. He just wishes Flora was still here. Mostly because she’s his twin. Partially because now the unity they’re fighting for is so much harder without the promise of Immunity.

Echo’s hand slides down, her fingers clasping the controller in his hand. “I’ll try.” River releases it, glad for her understanding and compassion. He can’t bear the thought of looking over the edge.

Echo walks a few feet away, facing the gaping hole and lifting the controller. Her hand tenses as she presses it, then waits.

Long seconds pass and nothing happens. Nectar doesn’t appear.

“Yep, Oren’s jammed the signal,” River says heavily.

Echo returns to River, passing him the controller. “We’ll need to wait until we’re beside her so we can use a voice command.” She glances at the elevator. “Right now, we need to help the Dead Borns.”

She’s right. Oren’s trying to incite the war they’ve avoided until now.

They reach the elevators, only to discover the doors refuse to open. Oren has once again been a step ahead. River’s lips twist. “The stairs it is.”

He’s just opened the door when Reed speaks. “The Dead Borns are all over the place. How are we going to keep them all safe?”

River and Echo glance at each other, neither of them speaking. Because neither of them has an answer. The Sting is a massive building. Who knows where the Dead Borns have scurried to, especially now they know they’re seen as a threat to every Green Born’s future.

The industrial floors directly below the Hive are silent and still. The Green Borns abandoned them as they holed up in their rooms. The Dead Borns either haven’t found them, or saw there’s nowhere to hide among the machines to produce glass and metal and timber.
